Federal Pell Grants — awards available to undergraduates (not holding a bachelor's degree) who demonstrate financial need. These are grants and do not have to be paid back.
The subsidized Federal Stafford Loan is awarded based on need. The Federal Government pays interest due while the student is in school and during the grace period. The maximum amount a 1st year student can borrow is $2,625.00 (this total can be split up in both subsidized and unsubsidized - This is a loan and must be paid back. You will have a 6-month grace period from the date of completion or withdrawal from school to begin repaying your loan.
The unsubsidized Federal Stafford Loan is not awarded based on need; interest accrues from the time the loan is dispersed until it is paid in full. The student has the option of making the interest payments while they are in school. If you choose to allow the interest to accumulate, it will be capitalized.
Capitalization is the process whereby a lender adds unpaid interest to the principal balance of a loan and additional interest will be based upon the higher loan amount. This is a loan and must be paid back.

Federal parent loan for undergraduate students: (FPLUS)
This program enables parents to borrow directly from many lending institutions to pay for a dependent child's cost of education.
Repayment begins within 60 days of the date the loan is disbursed.
There is also an alternative loan program called a “Career Loan” that you can apply for. This type of loan is not guaranteed and is based upon you credit history. The interest on this loan is not fixed by the same rules as the Stafford Loans. You may also require a co-signer for this loan.

The primary purpose of financial aid is to provide financial resources to students who, otherwise would be unable to attend. To be qualified for financial aid under the following federally sponsored programs, the student:
• Must be a US National or permanent resident, holding an alien registration card.
• Must demonstrate financial need
• Must be enrolled on a part time or full-time schedule
• Must maintain satisfactory progress
• Cannot be in default of a prior federal grant or loan
